Focus: A New Skill

It started with the top of the electric toothbrush. A few weeks ago Finn sat on the bathroom floor for a good 15 minutes studying the odd little device, taking the top on and off, twisting and turning the various pieces, examining it from every angle. It is hard to describe other than to say he was so absorbed and focused, like a little engineer, trying to figure the toothbrush out. I had never seen him fixate on something with such interest and for so long.

Our little potato boy spends most of his time zigging and zagging around the house, barely still for a minute. Throwing a ball, kicking a ball, laying on the ground to launch a ball, hunting for the remote, asking to watch Elmo, putting his little animals in a pitcher, pressing buttons, building towers, reading books, following Calvert, spinning, dancing, jumping. All without much pause.

Yet now there have been a few pauses. A few days ago he was engrossed in buckling his high-chair buckles, with Grampa's help. He has begun to have the patience to piece together his giant Legos. His cars and their toy garage have regained his interest. Yesterday he sat and examined a truck, especially interested in the switches that make it go backwards and forwards.

Finn's beloved balls converged with stickers in a few moments of focus this morning!
