Wylie reading

Post-nap, Wylie is sweet as could be, in his crib, reading to himself from Elmo:

Elephant, where's elephant? Back here, back here, no, back here. Yes! Back here, no? (Repeat, repeat.). Up. Ice cream. Where's hamburger? Here's hamburger. Cockadoodle doo. Monster, this is big monster. This is little monster.

Finn's Preschool "Graduation"

This kid is versatile.  Gracefully accepting his mortar board and portfolio one moment, brandishing a sword the next.  He has recently taken to saying "either/or" and it suits him.

As he says good-bye to Concordia the delightful Ms. Torraco, Miss Therese, and Miss Katie, he looks forward to walking to Lincoln with the neighbor's dog, Brodie.

Awaiting the ceremony

Performing a few songs for the parents
Accepting his "Best Hand-Raiser" Award

Receiving his mortar board and portfolio

This is what it's really all about.

Random Wylie

"One and a half," Wylie just told a neighbor on the street.

This is funny, first of all, because though he's a solid 2, he tends to lie about his age. When asked, he'll most commonly reply 50 or five and a half.

It is even funnier because the neighbor we were chatting with did not ask how old he was. She hadn't asked him anything.

Beginning to Help: Mother's Day Clean-Up

Inspired by my grad-school friend Sheila, her boys, and their Pennies of Time, I am determined to kick-start some service with Finn and (sometimes) Wylie this summer.

For years I've said I wanted to volunteer, to help my community, to do something good, something bigger than me.  And, I always found a reason not to.  Now, with the boys, seems like the perfect time to do good, to serve, to help.  So, this summer we are going to spend some time helping others.  What's a realistic goal?  I'm aiming for once a week, maybe more.

On Mother's Day, we were heading out for a hike (sure, a tromp through the woods and a meadow at a nearby Forest Preserve counts as a hike) and I grabbed a couple of plastic bags.  I figured we might see some garbage, especially along the Des Plaines River after the recent flood, and hoped we could do a tiny bit of good.  What better place to start than helping the Earth.

This turned out to be the perfect intro. to service for Finn.  Tromping through mud to pick up trash.  Yes!  And so we've begun.  Maybe I'm crazy but I already feel like we're more aware of other people's needs.  Nothing huge, but the beginning of a summer of service.  We will definitely go back to river to pick up more garbage, and hope to bring some friends next time!

Starting to notice trash along the river.
Wishing we'd brought more bags (and that Finn hadn't lost his).

Resting after our stroll through the woods.
Happy Mother's Day to me.

Super Mom Moment

Tired of micro-managing the five-year-old each weary post-work afternoon.

Funny pudding

Wylie is a wacky one. Apparently eating pudding, tapioca pudding, is this funny. Especially without a shirt.

Soccer

Finn is loving soccer.  He loves running after the ball, finding his way into the center of the pack, and hopefully making contact with the ball, sending it across the field.  Doesn't matter which way the ball goes.  And, if it goes out of bounds, even better, someone gets to throw it back in!

I don't think it occurs to Finn just yet that the ball is supposed to go in a certain direction, even though when I ask him, he knows which goal he's supposed to be aiming for.  All the more fun that way.

He seems vaguely interested in winning the game, but has his own optimistic view of the final score.  In his mind his team always wins.  I laugh as I hear Finn's interpretation of the number of goals each team scored and then Zach's accurate score report.

He just looks so happy while out on the field.  He is in constant motion, surrounded by other boys in motion.  I love that he can enjoy the game without worry about the score, for now anyway.

Finn and Zach gearing up for the game.

It is just fun.

Cheering for his teammates.

Distracted from the ball by something equally entertaining.
